Hello everyone,
I have a friend who has a rather new computer with XP
Home. She had a problem with the computer and needed to
reload the system according to the computer manufacturer.
Problem : CD bad.. Will not load correctly. Keeps not
finding files on initial setup. Compter Manufacture wants
her to buy a new OS CD at a cost of $200.. What would be
the procedure for getting a new CD from MS or someone? I
cant see how they would need to purchase a new OS for
just the CD. Any one know? Thank you.

Scott.

She could try booting from a floppy and beginning setup that way.
If the CD isn't badly scratched, it may simply need to be washed with dish
soap and warm water, then dryed.
Otherwise, she'll need to contect the computer maker's Customer Service
department and explain her situation.

But bear in mind that unless you see that the cd is messed up (i.e.,
there are some nice big scratches on it), the problem might not be with
the physical cd. It could be that her RAM is bad, or the hard drive is
going. There have also been other issues with restore disks not working
properly from HP and Compaq. Since you don't say who the manufacturer
is, we can't guess but you should also check their website for Known
Issues.
