New caption labels saving

I am frequently writing reports in Word and I normally insert captions for my
figures, tables etc. I often add new caption labels, for instance "photo".
The problem is that when I have added a new label in a document, the label is
not available the next time I open the same document. The problem appeared
when my software was changed from Office 2000 to Office 2003. Before I did
not have this problem. It does not help to save the added label in a template
- it is not available when I create a new document based on the template. If
I open the template the new label is there, so in some way it is saved.

This is incredibly frustrating. The next time I am editing the document and
want to add a "photo" caption, I have to create a new label again. The
problem is even worse if I want to insert a cross-reference to an old "photo"
caption. If the caption lable "photo" has not been created at that particular
occasion, it is not in the list to choose from as cross-reference either.
Then I have to first create a new caption lable, insert a caption that I do
not need and then insert the cross-reference. Incredibly annoying!

Does anyone know why this happens? How do I save the new caption lable in
the same way as it was saved in Office 2003?

In recent versions of Word, caption labels are saved in the Registry.
Perhaps there is a problem with your Registry?

What is the Windows Registry? How can I make Word save the new caption labels
in the Registry? You gave advice on this to someone before (which I found
after I asked my question), but I did not understand that answer.

Go to Start | Help and type "registry" into the index.

OK, I understand now how what the registry works and that I should not edit
it. But how do i make sure that my new caption labels are saved?

You may need to edit the Registry. <g> Whenever Word's settings are not
saved, it's always possible that the problem is caused by a damaged Registry
key. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm
