New AMD System Won't Boot

J

Jamie

Hello all,
I've just upgraded my mob, CPU, PSU, and ram--plugged everything i
and it powers on, posts, but crashes/reboots before loading o
(winxp). Constant loop of rebooting
In bios, it recognizes everything-
AMD Athlon 64 2800+ cp
MSI K8MM-V (Via K8M800-CE/VT8237R) motherboard (plug n' play
Quantum Fireball 30gb hd (IDE
tdk cd/r
c

I don't see the ram in bios
512mb pc3200 ddr

An error message flashes before loading os, but can't capture (pause
screen quick enough, ever. Tried booting from WinXP cd (as primar
boot drive) as well as from hard drive...always crashes and reboot
first. Any suggestions greatly welcomed

Thanks all

What power supply do you have? Did you also plug in the 4-pin connector
to the motherboard?

There could also be an issue with the memory. You should run a
memory tested (such as www.memtest86.com) from a bootable
floppy or CD.

I guess you are using a hard drive with Windows and software already
installed? If so, try booting with the Windows CD and performing a
repair install. You can get a good tutorial at
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/.

Windows is constantly rebooting in an attempt to reconcile its virtual
device drivers -- the vxd files that corresponded with the previous
hardware. If you let it run for 15 or 20 reboots, it might clear
up....

If you have the hardware, I recommend a fresh install of the OS.

HTH!

That's exactly right--HD with WinXp and software already installed. I
just tested my HD on another system and it functions. Created an
MS-Dos boot disk.

The issue is--I can't boot anything on the new computer before it
crashes--I can get into Windows Adv Options (f8), but it crashes
right after no matter what I do. This being the case, how could I
reinstall/repair OS?

Am going to make the six floppy boot disks and give that a try--or is
all this futile (re: the virtual device system...)?

Thanks for your help--I think you've nailed the nature of the problem
(and hope it's not hardware related)...

If you haven't already, try removing ALL components of the system except
those required to boot. As a Dell FST i've seen some weird things cause
weird boot problems. Do this before making any permanent moves regarding
reinstalling windows, as it may not be (and, by what you've already said,
probably isn't) a problem with the HD.

This would suggest it's not a problem with the HDD -- try *everything* you
can before permanently altering it. (just reiterating from above)

I was just about to ask if you'd tried safe mode.... i'm blind, obviously.
If push comes to shove, you should use the original Windows CD (hoping you
have one, and if you don't, one is owed to you imho), boot from CD, and
install windows from there. if *that* doesn't work, then you know it's a
hardware problem.

signs are pointing at "hardware problem" at the moment (your HD working fine
on another system is a strong indicator). so, not futile.

(and hope it's not hardware related)...

If it is (memory, for example), hopefully you can get an RMA or warranty
replacement...

Errr, isn't this the worrying bit? Try a different stick, or put the stick
in another machine...

Dittos to Falco....

The Repair Install involves your orignal XP cd, and the
michaelstevenstech website (among many others) provides an adequate
tutorial.

Insert your XP CD before booting; if you need to adjust your boot
device order, you will need to enter BIOS to do so.
