New account for Live Mail fails

C

chopperbobby

I have been trying to open an e-mail account for my wife in Windows Live Mail.
I clicked on "Accounts" > "Mail" > "Add". "Add an e-mail account". I then
entered my wife's e-mail name, and since I didn't get an error message I'm
assuming that the name was available. Then I created a password, and checked
the "Remember Password" box. The next window told me that the account had
been created.
When I tried to access the account I got this message: "The sign-in name
you entered doesn't exist, or your password is incorrect."
I was very careful about the name and password, so I believe they were
correct. I tried previous to this attempt using a different User/Password
combination with same results.
I have Windows XP Home. I use Qwest/MSN.
Please advise, and thank you.

I tried, but could not find anything more specific to Windows Live Mail.

Holy crap! YOUR POST IS THERE! That's what "cross-posted to..."
means. Wait for replies... IF any are going to come.

C

Yes, I did. It was a very slow loading Live Mail that gave the impression
that my computer was 'frozen' at that point.
It was Qwest that was at fault.
Now, back to my present problem. I can not find the cross post that is
referred to. Maybe the forest is hiding the trees?

You are amazing (there are more appropriate and descriptive terms).
Every post since I cross-posted this thread has been showing up in the
other group.

How much more info could you possibly need?

I think we're dealing with an extreme case of PEBKAC here.

I have been trying to open an e-mail account for my wife in Windows Live
Is the new mail account a Hotmail account (e.g., (e-mail address removed)) or an
ISP account (e.g., (e-mail address removed))?

Did you attempt to create a brand-new (literally) account in WLMail by
selecting an "e-mail name" (e.g., MrsCB) and adding @hotmail.com to it
(e.g., (e-mail address removed))? If so, that's not how it works.

I clicked on "Accounts" > "Mail" > "Add". "Add an e-mail account". I then
entered my wife's e-mail name, and since I didn't get an error message I'm

Windows Live Mail does not know if a given email name is available, or not
available. It will treat *any* email name you enter as available, whether it
is, or not. Windows Live Mail cannot create an email account which does not
exist.
Then I created a password, and checked the "Remember Password" box. The next
window told me that the account had been created.
When I tried to access the account I got this message: "The sign-in name
you entered doesn't exist, or your password is incorrect."

Unless you actually visited the Windows Live site, and created the account
there, the account does not, in fact, exist. Windows Live Mail, the desktop
client, is not able to create a new account when none exists.
I was very careful about the name and password, so I believe they were
correct. I tried previous to this attempt using a different User/Password
combination with same results.

You need to go to the appropriate site and create the email account there.
As a non-Qwest customer, I would go here:

http://get.live.com/mail/options

This link actually appears in the "Add an E-mail Account" dialogue box in
Windows Live Mail. The box has fields for the email address, password, and a
display name. Under the email address field is a line with:

"(e-mail address removed) _Get a free e-mail account_"

The latter, underscored, is a link which will open up to the same site as
the link I just posted. Don't know how I would set it up as a Qwest user,
though. But that site should work, as it is, without worrying about whether
you are a Qwest user.

You do not create email accounts (addresses) in WLM.
You create the address with your ISP and add the account to WLM.
The account has to already exist with your ISP. When you add the account to
WLM, it will attempt to send and receive email from that account.

P

PA Bear [MS MVP]

Can you sign-in at www.mail.live.com using that Username and Password (if
there is one)? I doubt it.

Repeat: You cannot just create an email address on your own. You'll either
have to create a new (e-mail address removed) (or (e-mail address removed)) account at
http://get.live.com/mail/options or contact your MSN-Partner ISP (Qwest) to
create the new (e-mail address removed) account, Bob.

As far as I can tell, I have followed the required procedure, but maybe I'm
going off course along the way. I went back, removed my wife's e-mail name
from her desktop and WLM.
Then: Start > E-Mail (Windows Live Mail) > Tools > Accounts > Add > E-mail
Account > Next > E-Mail Address: (e-mail address removed) > Password > ..........
Checked "Remember Password" > Display Name > Elaine > Next > I get this
message: "You have successfully entered in the information required to set up
your account." > Finish > The "Sing in-Windows Live ID" window opens with
this message: "The sign in name you entered doesn't exist or your password is
incorrect."

Try and understand: Windows Live Mail (nor any other email client) CAN NOT
create new email account, it can only be configured to access an already
existing email account. If the email account does not exist, WLM CAN NOT
create it.
I opened WLM, and followed the procedure I posted in my original post. The
procedure completed with a message that told me that the account had been
created. But, as I said in the post I received a message saying that either
the user name or password was no good.

The procedure you outlined in your original post is the procedure to add an
***EXISTING*** email account to WLM. If the account does not exist, adding
it to WLM does nothing to create it. You wind up with an account pointing to
an invalid (non-existent) email address.
I am a Qwest customer though.

Then you need to figure out how to add extra email accounts for Qwest
accounts. Qwest is so different from other ISPs that I am clueless about how
to do that. Contacat Qwest support.
I was attempting to create an e-mail address like this: (e-mail address removed).

You need to check with Qwest about adding extra accounts. I know how Comcast
works. I know how 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' works. I have a rough idea of how
Verizon works. I know nothing about how Qwest works. This is a Qwest issue.
Find a Qwest support group for assistance. You might try here:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/ilec,uswest

The ***POINT*** of my post is this: You can't use WLM to create an email
address which does not exist; you can only use it to add an existing
account. The email address ***MUST ALREADY EXIST*** to be able to use the
WLM "Add account" Wizard to add the account to the client.

This is not a limitation of Windows Live Mail, this is standard for any
email client. If you don't already have an email address, no client, not
Mozilla Thunderbird, not Pegasus Mail, not MS Outlook...none of them can
create that email account.

Adding an account is completely different from creating an account. You must
first create the account, before you can add it. Windows Live Mail can't
create the account.

S

sgopus

Step one, stop trying to create an e-mail account on your home pc. this is
not the way to do it.
Step two if you want an MSN account, visit Microsoft.com and create it.
Step three. when you want to retreive e-mail visit Microsoft.com sign on to
your account
and retreive/read/delete your e-mail.
I can hardly believe that in this day and age, one needs this spelled out so
detailed, but
so be it.
