new 2nd bootable HD, hangs after user login

P

paixx01

aloha all from honolulu
just installed a 2nd HD, made it bootable, copied all files over from
1st HD unplugged the 1st HD, new HD boots

but after win2k login, i get no taskbar, desktop icons, i get only the
background image, the 'task manager' will come up SLOWLY, but thats it,
i've rebooted few times, same thing

so i tried to boot off win2k CD and i did a 'fast repair' however no
change to the status.

i guess i could copy over more things from HD1 to new HD2 but am not
sure if that will do

or what to copy over for that matter

thanks for any help in advance

thx but that is not it

fwiw, i'm booting off a pci133 card,
i just tried plugging into the 2nd header instead of the 1st, only
thing different is it complains
with a dialog box saying

you do not have a paging file do this and this
however i can't do this and this as i can't get a taskbar, icons,
just background image

"complains

|
| you do not have a paging file"

Yes that's exactly what I would expect if the drive letter changed.

dave,

when i installed the new 2nd HD, i copied all info from HD1 on pci
header 1 to HD2 on pci card header 2, and made HD2 bootable

NOW

i've tried booting with HD2 plugged into pci card header 2 and THEN pci
card header 1, hence 'nothing has changed'

both of these instances were done with HD1 disconnected from ANY
header.

thanks

i'm sort of wondering how i'm going to indicate in the registry a drive
number, if i'm booting
off what they call a scsi pci ata133 card , which has no drive letter
that i know of ?

Since it's a new disk it has no disk signature hence windows has no way to
know what drive letter to associate with it. I'd try the article.

Check that explorer.exe is the default shell to start. Look at the Reg_Sz
string value of;
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
