installed 2nd HD ==> partitions gone

I installed a second harddisk as slave on the computer under windows
XP,
then booted , a window opens on the bottom-bar
saying "new hardware found" ... but after a minute or such the window
closes again.

And not only can't I see the 2nd HD, but all partitions
on the first HD except c: are gone !

I had c:,d:,e:,and f: before on that 1st HD.

is it possible to get the partitions d:,e:,f: back ?

- What makes you think they are gone?
- What does the program diskmgmt.msc report?
- What do you see when you run mountvol.exe?

You can invoke these two programs from a Command
Prompt: Click Start / Run / cmd{OK}, then type the
above command names.

OK, thanks.
diskmgmt.msc shows only c: , floppy and CD. Only one partition NFTS

mountvol shows:

Erstellt, l"scht oder listet einen Volumebereitstellungspunkt auf.

MOUNTVOL [Laufwerk:]path VolumeName
MOUNTVOL [Laufwerk:]path /D
MOUNTVOL [Laufwerk:]path /L

angegebene Verzeichnis an.

M"gliche Werte fr VolumeName mit aktuellen Bereitstellungspunkten:

\\?\Volume{acd73726-7322-11da-89ef-806d6172696f}\
C:\

\\?\Volume{acd7371f-7322-11da-89ef-806d6172696f}\
H:\

\\?\Volume{acd7371e-7322-11da-89ef-806d6172696f}\
A:\

\\?\Volume{e664a756-6771-11dc-9c6d-004854120abe}\
D:\

A: is floppy disk
H: is CD-ROM
D: is USB-stick

I'm hesitant to experiment too much, because the old partitions could
still be there in a hidden state, but might get destroyed.

=================

It is quite extraordinary that your partitions should disappear after
installing a second disk. I have literally done this hundreds of times
and I never experienced anything like this.

As you say, there is a good chance that the partitions might still
be there and that the partition table got corrupted. One of these
programs might help you resolve the problem:

http://www.restorer2000.com/r2k.htm (to restore NTFS partitions)
http://www.hddrecovery.com.au
http://bootmaster.filerecovery.biz
http://www.runtime.org/ (GetDataBack - has a trial version)
http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/filerecoverysecdownload.html
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html
www.acronis.com (RecoveryExpert)

Some time ago I tested RecoveryExpert by deliberately deleting
a partition, then restoring it. It worked well.

well, your hundredths of times were probably always in similar
situations,
similar environments. My experience is much worse. 30% failure rate
with
new hardware, I guestimate. But usually it doesn't destroy existing
hardware
or software.

Maybe the other partitions were other FAT or such ?

Also, the former previous 2nd HD at g: damaged badly,
loud noise,no access. When it was removed everything was good
in c: e: f: until I installed the new HD.
Maybe the software was confused by this ?!

I tried some such recovery-programs - no success.
About 10000 files in about 2000 directories are still missing,
there is probably a backup, but some months old.
It's a friend's computer, I already spent some hours on this ...
I give it one more hour, then I give up.
