Hello Group, When Windows XP Pro Became available, I bought 5 copies. So
far I've used 4 of the copies in various Computers that I made & sold.
Now... within the next month, I will be putting together another computer
for myself and I want to use the last copy.
Once I install the OS, Will I be guided to a Win XP Pro Update site ???????
I'd want all the security updates and of course SP1 & SP2.
The reason I'm asking is due to a MS announcement quite a while ago that MS
will no longer support XP updates..!
Be very careful of connecting an unpatched original release Windows XP
to the Internet. It will have a life expectancy of about 30 seconds,
after which it will be infested by a number of viruses and trojans.
If you must connect it to the Internet before updating with at least
Service Pack 1 then make certain that you have an effective firewall
in place before connecting it. A router with NAT protections would be
quite adequate, as would turning on the built-in firewall in Windows
XP.
But I suggest that you download the full Service Pack 2 on your other
computer, burn it to a CD, and use that to update the new computer
before connecting it to the Internet. Get the Service Pack download
from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
or order it on a CD from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
If you are going to be selling this computer then you would be doing
then purchaser a real favor if you also made a new installation CD for
them that has Service Pack 2 slipstreamed into it. See
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp
http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html
http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49
Note that Service Pack 2 is cumulative, and includes all of Service
Pack 1. Also be aware that there are a more than 60 additional
critical updates to Windows XP that have been issued since Service
Pack 2 which need to be downloaded and installed on a new computer.
However it is legitimate to leave these for the purchaser to do,
unless you know they are on dial-up Internet and you have a high speed
connection available.
Good luck
