HELP
I have a desktop running xp pro
my other is a notebook running xp home
They are connected to the internet thru a router (cable)
I cannot figure out how to share files between the two.
I have checked that the workgroup name is the same.
subnet mask is the same.
The notebook appears in the list of workgroup computers on my desktop, but I
cannot access it .
I have tried disabling the windows firewall, but that seems to make no
difference. The files I wish to share have sharing allowed. I am stumped.
any hints???
even changed user accounts to be identical.....

Run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers, and tell it that they
connect to the Internet through a residential gateway (router).
That's usually all that's needed to get file sharing to work.

If there's a firewall program (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, Sygate,
PC-cillin, etc) on either computer, make sure that it's configured to
allow access on the local area network.

Make sure that the Guest account is enabled for network access on each
computer by typing this line in the Start | Run box:

net user guest /active:yes

thanks... I followed you steps and made the change in Sygate and it appears
to be working now.... Thanks again for your assistance!

You're welcome! I'm glad that my suggestions helped you solve the
problem. Thanks for reporting the result.

Running more than one firewall can cause problems, so it's important
to disable the Windows Firewall when another one is installed.

Sub question

I have file sharing ok but only when my internet connection is enabled on
both computers. Is it not possible to file share without the internet
connection "live"?
John

Hi John, I have a near identicaly setup to you also using Dell and a dell
laptop

I get the same problem - the computers don't connect unless internet is
connected. As far as I can work out this is because the IP addresses are
assigned by the ISP (your internet service provider) If you cut the internet
off the network fails.
