network of computers on Windows 98 without any problems?

Yes, with one exception. The browser (I'm not talking about Internet Explorer)
service on Windows XP doesn't work well on the same LAN with Windows 98.

Make sure the browser service is not running on the WinXP computer. Control
Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser
service shows with Status = Stopped and Disabled.
