I got a laptop and I set up the wireless network perfectly and it works
great .I am trying to share printers, I ping , from desktop to laptop and
vice versa and it times out. I disabled the firewalls, could it be that XP
pro is on my desktop and XP home is on the laptop? Any other ideas would be
greatly appreciated.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on your XP Pro machine and create the
network setup disk (note you can use a USB flash drive for this if
either or both machines do not have a 3.5 diskette drive).

Then take the setup disk to the laptop and run the configuration
utility on it.

That should sort things out for you.

If not then you should probably try posting to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web rather than here as that is
where the real network gurus hang out. And if you do this mention
that you have already tried the network setup disk.

Good luck

I thought that one of the differences between XP Pro and XP Home was the
ability to network. Is that the case?

No. Peer to Peer networking setup capabilities are the same in both
versions. The networking differences are the in ability to join a
Windows Server Domain, which only Pro can do; and in the ability to
control network user access on a file and folder basis, which again
only Pro can do.

Hi there,

I am in a VERY similar situation.
I also have just got a new HP Pavilion laptop which has Win XP Home on
it, although my 2 Desktops both run Win XP Pro.

At rhe moment I have the laptop access the internet via Wi-Fi with no
problems, and I also have it connected to a printer via Bluetooth.
One of the Desktops is connected to the Wi-Fi Router via a cable the
other desktop by a USB Wi-Fi dongle.. they both connect OK to the
internet, as does the laptop.

What I would like to do now is link them so I can share files between
all three (laptop and 2 desktops) and also be able to print to the
Printer attached to the desktop from the laptop.
So :-
a) Would this be possible ?
b) Would this be done best via Wi-Fi ?
Note : All 3 computers have Wi-Fi AND Bluetooth
c) Best way to set it up ?
Network Wizard ?
Do I use "Set up a wireless network for a home or small office" ?

I have been putting of setting up a full network, it seems a daunting
task .. any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

If all 3 computers are running Windows XP then you should be able to
run the Network Setup Wizard to configure them.

Create the wizard disk on the first computer (any one) and then use
run the utility from that diskette on the other two.

If any of your computers do not have a 3.5 inch diskette drive then
you can use a USB flash drive instead.

Good luck

Hi Ron,

Thanks for that, it has made things clearer now for me !

The 2 desktops have 3.5" floppy drives (old I know but I still use
them fo back up etc... old habits die hard !), and I have a 3.5" HP
USB floppy drive too (bought new off eBay) for the laptop, so I will
be able to save to disk. I do have a card reader (on all too), as I
use CF, SD, MMC and Memory Stick, and I also hacve 2 USB flash drives
as well. But I'll stick with the floppy for this task !

Once again, many thanks,

Steve
