Hi all. I know there is a way to do this. I have seen it done before and I
believe that it is as simple as checking a box off in one of the system
policies, but I am unable to figure out where this checkbox is. The problem
is that the XP Pro PC does not recognize the NT4 domain and I need to get it
to recognize the domain controller. I believe it is relying solely on DNS
and not looking for the NetBIOS name.

Does anyone know where this magical checkbox is? I would greatly appreciate
it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, Elizabeth -

An XP Professional machine should hook in to an NT4
domain without checking any boxes at all ;-)

Let's get the simple stuff out of the way first. We know
the NT4 DC must be running SP6a, right? Also, a domain
account for the machine itself is required. I know this
is simple stuff, but if those two prerequisites are met
the XP box ought to connect with no problems.

Windows XP defaults to the NetBIOS setting of the DHCP
server. If the machine has a static IP then NetBIOS over
TCP-IP is enabled by default. If the DHCP server doesn't
provide this information you might need to enable NetBIOS
over TCP-IP. You'll find it in the properties (advanced)
of the instance of TCP-IP that's bound to the NIC.

Hope this helps -

Thanks for the input. I enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and now I'm getting a
different message. (At least the XP workstation is now finding the NT4
PDC.) I am now getting an access denied message.

We are not running DCHP here. The NT4 box, as far as I know, is running
SP4. I know that XP boxes can hook to this domain because there are three
XP boxes hooked in already. Now we just got a new laptop in loaded with XP
Pro and I was tasked with joining it to the domain. I'm dealing with old
technology here... I'm an MCSE on 2000 not NT4. How does one create a
machine account on the PDC?

Could you lend me more more insight on this issue? Thanks again.

Thanks for the info, GTS. I looked at it and disabled the item it told me
to. I am still getting an access denied. There's got to be something else.
But what?

Hi again -

There are two ways to create a domain account on an NT4
domain - the first is to run Server Manager either from
the server or the client (it's on the server CD if you
decide to install it on the client) and the other is to
create the domain account from the workstation. Let's
try that one first ;-)

On the XP machine if you right-click My Computer and
select Properties --> Computer Name you'll see where to
join the computer to a domain. Since you now have
connectivity to the DC it should work just fine. When
you try to join the domain you'll be prompted for the
username and password of someone authorized to add
computers to the domain - if you're a domain admin all
you do is put your domain admin username and password in
the box and away you go ;-)

Holler if you need more help -

Thank you, Allan!

Sometimes we just can't see the forest for the trees even when the answer is
right smack under our noses. I couldn't join the pc because my account info
did not have domain admin permissions... When I flagged down someone who
did to enter her credentials, it worked.

Thank you (and GTS) again. The answer to the mystery was a combination of
things and it has finally been solved.
