Networking XP PC and XP laptop with crossovercable

I am trying to get both my PC (XP sp1) and my laptop (XP
sp1)networked using a USB brodband connection and a
crossover cable. I have actually had it working, but it
remains inconsistant. I appear to have a problem with IP
address'. I need help in what and where to go to for
information. Better still advice on whether or not to
start over.
