Networking XP machines...a sad tale

Megalli

I have recently had some very strange problems networking
my Win XP laptop and desktop machines. They have been
painlessly networked for over a year (on wireless NAT).
And then, recently *POOF*.

I have been through the MS Knowledge Base. Article 308007
was particularly good, and I recommend it to others having
XP networking problems.

Alas, the problem remains.

Everything in the troubleshooter works, with one
exception. Step #4 in trouble shooting File/Printer
sharing. The machines can "see" each other within
Workgroup list, but not when I run \\computername.

Anyone have any ideas on why this might be happening and
what I can do about it?

Thnks.

Do you get an error when navigating to \\computername? Kind of sounds like
a firewall went bad...

Can you ping the machine by name? by ip address?

Ken --

I don't get an error -- I am told that the network path couldn't be found.

No ICF or other Firewall installed (except for Linksys Nat). Any other
possibilites?

Thanks

I can ping by IP address, but pinging by name does nothing (ie. no error
returned, just nothing)

Megalli,

before Ken comes back, just a few guesses. Perhaps NetBIOS over
TCP/IP has been disabled.

If that's not it, perhaps you can find the cause in
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

Hans-Georg

The NetBIOS over TCP/IP is probably a good bet. I don't know if the Linksys
routers do DNS or not.

NetBIOS are enabled.

I will try the other things on the michna.com site -- there is a lot there.
