Networking XP Home to XP Pro

T

Tim

I have two XP Pro machines networked and bought a new XP Home machine. I
just want to access a database that is on the Pro machine using the XP Home
machine. They are both on the same workgroup and I can see the workgroup
from the Home machine but when I try to join it says I don't have
permission. I don't believe the Pro machine is set up on a domain as I
understand this would prohibit the Home from joining. When I try to
manually map a drive using the same address that is working on the second
Pro machine it says it doesn't exist.
Any help would be appreciated,
Tim

Pro. can't be set up as a domain (although it can join one).

Do you have "File & Printer Sharing" enabled on each machine?
Do you have "Internet Connection Sharing" enabled on both machines?
Do you run any firewall software (if so, is your firewall configured to
allow local network traffic?)?
Have you tried the "Networking Wizard"?

Try adding a password to your user account on the new XP Home machine,
if it doesn't already have one. Then try to access the database on the
XP Pro machine.

Tim,

As the other advice indicates, your computers are probably not in a domain,
unless you have a fourth computer that you haven't mentioned - XP cannot provide
a domain by itself.

First, check all computers and ensure that you have the right network components
and services activated.

Then, check for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous.

Registry setting restrictanonymous:

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.
