Networking XP home edition

I am unable to network my new Gateway laptop (windows xp home) with my
333mhz compaq desktop (windows 98) using the network wizard. The two are
joined with a crossover connection. The laptop doesn't have a 3 1/4 inch
floppy drive, so I am unable to make a system disk as the wizard suggests.
The laptop came with XP pre-installed, and the compaq desktop will not read
the XP system backup CD that I burned when I purchased the laptop. I think
that the backup CD can only be read by a Gateway computer.

All I want to do is share files and share a printer hooked to my old Compaq.
Does anyone know if there is a way to set up the network manually? If so,
can anyone recommend a book where I can find good step-by-step instructions?

Write the executable file for the Network Setup Wizard to a CD or a
removable USB storage device on the laptop, then run it on the
desktop. The Wizard file is:

C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe

If that isn't possible, set up the desktop manually. Go to Control
Panel | Network and:

1. Add these network components if they aren't already present:

TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Remove these network components if they're present:

IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks

3. Set the workgroup name to the same name as the Windows XP computer
uses (default for XP is MSHOME).

Try assing IP each machine. For example:
10.1.1.10 and 10.1.1.11
mask: 255.255.255.0 both
Same Workgroup, different computer name. The Win98 user must be created
into XP users too.
