using Home as main and Pro connected thru wireless
adapter card, i am unable to see each computer. both are
in identical workgroup, both have NetBIOS enabled over
TCPIP, ICS is unchecked. when i try to see the PRO laptop
from XPHome's Microsoft Windows Network tree, i can see
the computer name in the workgroup but when i click on
it, i get this error msg: \\computername is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. contact administrator of this server
to find out if you have access permissions. network path
was not found." PLEASE HELP! Any suggestions are
greatly appreciated. i have read everything possible and
printed Microsoft's Troubleshooting document, but nothing
helps. !!! Thanks in advance :)

hi bronxxbabe
try turning on simple file sharing on xp pro pc, plus actually share some
folders.
(Open folder options in control panel, On the view tab, under advanced
settings, select "use simple file sharing")

simple file sharing was turned on before, but it wasn't
working. therefore, i turned it off. i don't know what
else to do. i also ran network wizard again, but this
time, under Network Connections, there is "Network
Bridge". What is that? Thanks again :(

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have the SFS settings properly set on each computer.

With XP Pro, if SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel
- Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

With XP Pro, if you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure
that the Guest account is enabled, and has an identical, non-blank, password on
all computers. If "Classic", setup and use a common account with identical,
non-blank, password on all computers.

For XP Home, OR for XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled (Administrative Tools - Computer Management), on each
computer.

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF or third party)? If so,
you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445 and
UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computers as present in the
Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of
(network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

(1) SFS is disabled on XP Pro; (2) Local Policies -
Security Options, "Network access: Sharing and security
model", is set to Classic; (3) on both Home and Pro,
Guest accounts are enabled. I'm using McAfee Security
Center on XP Home and in firewall utilities, i
enabled "Trusted IP Addresses", and in System Services, i
checked the two ports (445, 137-139). The McAfee
Security Center is totally disabled on XP Pro. STILL
CAN'T SET EACH OTHER. WHAT NEXT??? THANKS, i'm reading
the link you sent.

Are you logging into both machines with the same login and password?
(The password cannot be blank.)

If the XP Pro Sharing is set to Classic, setup and use a common account with
identical password on both computers.

Many personal firewalls do not react properly to being disabled. You must first
enable, then open the ports as specified. Or un install, until you get things
working.

Assuming that you have shares setup on each computer, go to Start - Run - type
"\\OtherComputerIPAddress" (substituting actual ip addresses). Does it show
shares?

Neither computer require user/pswd to logon; the McAfee
security center's utilities ARE NOT installed on XP Pro;
and YES, when i "run" IP addresses, the windows of each
computer appear. THANKS AGAIN,

What portion of Mcafee Security Center is installed on the XP Pro computer?

Try assigning a password to the common account, on both computers. Control
Panel - User Accounts.
