My xp computer is connected to a cable modem through a wired router. I ran
the networking wizard on the xp computer but cannot see my other(98se)
computer in the workgroup. Please help if you can...

Did you make the disk suggested at the end of the XP setup and used that
disk to setup the 98?
Have you setup any file sharing on the 98?

Yes, I did the setup on the 98se computer using both a disk made from the
wizard and the actual xp cd disk. It looked like the files copied over, but I
still can't see the other computer on either computer. I have set up file and
print sharing on both computers.

The most common reason for this problem is a misconfigured firewall.
Only run one firewall on a computer and the lan should be allowed as
trusted. Here is a network troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna:

Take the time to go through it and it will pinpoint the problem area(s).

Is there a step by step I can do to make sure I am getting all of the
components for networking on two different sytem applications (xp & 98se)
loaded, coded and assigned? I could not make heads or tails of the
troubleshooter.

From MVP Steve Winograd:

To run XP's network wizard on Win98:

Transfer this file, which contains the Wizard, from WIN XP to Windows98
and run it on 98. You can E-mail it, burn it to a CD, etc:

C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe

To set up Windows 98 manually, without using the Wizard, go to Control
Panel>Network and:

1. Add these network components if they aren't already present:

TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Remove these network components if they're present:

IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks

3. Set the workgroup name to the same name as the Windows XP computer
uses (default for XP is MSHOME).

4. Right-click and share any desired disks, folders, and printers.

Make sure you've properly configured any firewalls to allow the lan
traffic as trusted.

Maybe you need install NETBEUI in windows xp network properties of your
connection, only if win98 it has it, check too what IP directions have both

All I have ever done is make sure that the workgroup name is the same
on all the PC's.
