networking with XP

I have RC2 and can not access RC2 with XP. When I try to access RC2 it
asks for a username/password. I do not have a password, I have password OFF
in networking and sharing. I have sharing enabled on some folders and my
printer but can't access them from XP. Any suggestions?

If you're using broadband with a router, I have the same problem.
I can access with XP, RC1 but not when I install RC2.
I've seen a lot of posts but no answers.

Look a few posts up to Simply share C: on my LAN - Garry Grolman.

Microsoft seemingly does not consider home LANs as very important. Perhaps
Domains orientated networks get more attention.

Many many many people are now installing LANs at their home to keep their
kids from the 'Masters' machine but everyone has access to the Internet.
Looking at various help files and writings, they are always interspersed
with Internet stuff that only muddies the water.

All I want to do is have two way access for file copying between my
production computer, XP, and my test computer Vista. If I am Vista, I can
copy from the XP machine. I cannot copy back from my Vista to the XP
machine.

If I am XP, I can see disk C: of the Vista machine BUT I cannot see its
folders so obviously copying is not feasable.

I have tried hours to configure the various parameters to accomplish this
simple task BUT cannot do it.

Very frustrating and my blood pressure is up.

Microsoft has to reorganize its parameter screens to enable an administrator
to accomplish this 'minor' task and quickly make both machines accessable to
each other. Fantastic that with all the people involved in developing Vista,
this teeny weeny little problem seems to have been overlooked almost
entirely.

Just try entering a question into one of the help screens a see the reems
and reems of useless information presented to you but no workable answer to
your problem.

Microsoft could learn a lot from the Google search parameters to enable a
user to quickly get to the info he wants and not be drowned by other
superflous information.

Let us hope that a solution will be forthcoming

I've got this posted on a number of Vista boards with still no answer.
All had no trouble with RC1 but couldn't configure RC2.
All were router networked, the brand didn't make any diff.
RC1 doesn't even require a setup, it configures itself which, IMHO, thought
was great.
I hate the thought of all the service calls if the gold version is going to
be like RC2.
And I can't even get it to work.

I had the same problem with the user name and password. Your username will be
the the name you use to log into your windows. You cannot leave the password
blank, so you will have to add a password to your windows profile. Vista is
much more secure, and Vista is asking "who is trying to look at my files".

I am having around the same problem... but with a twist...

I have an XP Pro computer that my g/f uses, and mine, which runs vista...

The XP machine has two user names, both admins. One name is hers, the other
mine. MY name on the XP machine can access everything on my vista. Her name
how ever, get the access denied every time i try to open two particular
drives ( E and F, same hard drive, sep partitions)

I find it odd that one name on the computer can access it, while the other
one cannot. I have password protection off, and dont get any window for the
password...
