yes they are on seperate partitions..
ok so i need to ignore everything on the list for safe mode for compaqfront1
right? is that where i use the "kill" in PE? I am sorry to sound like an
idiot...just trying to uderstand.... if not how do you ignore? and is this
process availiable in PE?
Process Explorer does include a "kill" command. It's in the context menu (right
click), and in the toolbar at the top (red "X").
But do this discretely.
1) Find processes running in Normal Mode, that aren't running in Safe Mode.
2) Look up items from step 1 in these references:
Applications: <http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php>
Applications: <http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/>
Services: <http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm>
3) See if a process of interest uses TCP/IP, from PE, Process Properties -
TCP/IP tab.
Choose a process to kill from a combination of steps 1, 2, and 3. The problem
might not resolve immediately, you might have to reboot with the process killed
first.
A lot of this is intuitive to me, so I tend to omit details. So please ask
questions when I say something vague.
Another detail - Just in case one of these mysterious processes corrupts the
Winsock when terminated, get Winsock repair tools, copied onto the computer,
first.

With XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
command window.
Give LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, or WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257> a shot.
If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
