Networking with a firewall

I have to wireless netbooks & a wireless router. I can network the 2
computers and share the internet fine but the win xp firewall has to be
disabled in both computers. Is there a way out of this? Or is it ok for the
win xp firewall to be off because the d-link router, according to d-link
tech support, has its own firewall and already protects me?

Greetins robin,

With Windows XP with Service Pack 2, you can go into the Windows Firewall,
click the Exceptions tab and click the File and Printer sharing check box.
That D-Link router may offer some protection but that is only protecting you
from inbound traffic. That doesn't protect you from outbound traffic and the
XP firewall doesn't either. To protect you from both inbound and outbound
traffic, you can use a third party firewall such as ZoneAlarm or Norton
Internet Security.
