I am trying to set up a workgroup between my laptop which
has XP home and my desktop which has windows 98se. My XP
maching can see the 98se machine and access all shared
folders, but my 98 machine cannot see anything (not even
itself). I'm successful in pinging the XP machine and
vice versa. I've read a lot of posts on here and my XP
firewall and my nortel firewall on both machines are
disabled. Any suggestions???

Thanks,
Lauri

One thing I forgot to mention is that my laptop (running
XP) is on a wireless connection and my desktop is on an
ethernet connection both connected thru a linksys router.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other firewall
programs while troubleshooting. When un-installing a firewall
program, use the un-install procedure provided by the manufacturer .
Don't use Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs, which might not
completely un-install it.

For more information, see:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

4. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

Everything mentioned below is ok. Firewalls
disconnections, Node on XP machine is "Hybrid", NetBIOS
of TCP/IP is installed...any other suggestions?

Have similar situation, but reverse problem. Trying to network Win XP laptop to Win 98 SE desktop so I can use the printer and access files on the desktop. The desktop had no problem finding my laptop (XP Pro) and accessed the shared items folder and installed printers with no problem, but when I try to access the desktop drive from the laptop, I get an error message saying "you do not have permission to access this resource... Parameter is incorrect." I have the desktop (98 SE) set to share the C drive and printer, and it displays them as shared. Of note: when I tried to run the xp network setup disk on the desktop, it stops the program, saying I need to contact the system administrator, even though I'm logged in as the system administrator. Also, I am not sharing an internet connection

Thanks, Bria
