networking Vista with other Windows versions

I've got a handful of boxes running anything from Win2K through to Vista,
plus a Linux box. I've been trying to get them talking to one another, with
no luck. The Win2K, XP and Linux boxes all see each other and can talk to
one another with no problems, but the Vista machine is blind.

Well, these are things to take into account:
Are both computers in the same Workgroup?
Unique Machine names?
Static IP Addresses?
Network Discovery and Sharing enabled in Vista's Network and Sharing Center?
Have you checked the Firewall to make sure that Network Discovery is not
blocked?

Click Start > Network
Click "Network and Sharing Center"
Under "Sharing and Discovery" make sure the following are turned on: Network
Discovery, File Sharing, Public folder sharing, Password protected sharing,
Media Sharing.

What settings do you have in the Network and Sharing Center?

You should have network discovery enabled as well as file sharing.

In typical Microsoft fashion (Start button to turn it off etc) Password
Protected Sharing is actually a restriction, not a sharing enhancement,
therefore the OP actually wants to start with this turned "OFF". It
turns OFF the password protection, it does nothing to assist sharing.

This is a symptom of the "We are making things more secure" claims which
translate roughly to "We have made things look different"

It still remains true that the first priority is to begin with the same
username and password on at least two of the machines. Also no "Blank"
passwords.
