I am getting a laptop in a few days that has Windows XP Pro. I also have a
desktop with Windows 2000 Pro, a HP 4-in-1 printer & a HP photosmart printer.
I have the internet through my cable provider with a cable modem. I will be
installing Windows XP Pro on my desktop. Before I install XP Pro on my
desktop, I would like to save my important files from my desktop to my
laptop. I explained this to a guy at Office Depot. I also told him that I
would like to access the internet with both computers, be able to print from
both computers & access both computers from each other.

The guy suggested that I buy a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router Model
No.: WRT54G. He said that by using this router I would be able to access the
internet from both computers. He then said that I could configure both
computers to access one another & I can print from both computers.

If he is correct, how can I configure both Windows XP Pro and Windows 2000
Pro?

Hi Blake,

Yes, he is correct. The router will provide both systems with internet
access independent of each other, and allow them to "talk" to each other at
the same time if desired. Basically, the router will act as a DHCP server
and assign each pc its own IP, and translate this to the outside world.
Essentially you will create your own LAN (local area network).

As to the files and printers, you will need to setup sharing on each system,

first you have to configure the router! The router will cvome with a
manual, and a tel num to call linksys tech support. plus there's help
here.

then, in win2k and win xp, you have to configure file sharing.

it's not a walk in the park but it's convenient that both comps can
access the net simultaneously.
many ppl have > 1 comp on the net. it's handy.
an alternative is to connect your laptop hdd to your desktop. no
configuration required. but you need to buy a usb-ide adaptor and
2.5-3.5 adaptor cable.

The ***easiest** **quickest** way is to put your important data on a
CD!!!!!
Or if that is not possible. Then a USB Key.
