I have 2 computers running XP Pro...one is a laptop with
a wireless card, the other a desktop with NIC card. I can
see both computers on the network and I can access files
on the laptop with the desktop but not the other way
round. I do not have any firewalls running, not even on
my wireless router. I have enabled NetBios over TCP/IP on
both computers and DHCP is enabled as well. I can print
but not file share. I get a message that says "
<filename> is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. etc."Help...I've been fighting with
this
for 2 day and nights...I'm seeing double and have a
whopping headache. Tia

Make sure you haven't made the files on the desktop are not private or the the internal firewall for XP is not active. Also place an account for the laptop on your desktop for access.

Mark, having the same prblem. Bought resource book Windows XP inside/out, lots of great information but nothing it suggested worked. Added Netbuei and ISP protocol, no luck. Toggle on and off simple file sharing and advanced security doesn't seem to help. Obviously you can't use network programs if the program files can't be accessed. Let me know if you get any input. I'll do the same for you. Good luck to us both

Mark - just a thought - have you setup shares for the resources you want to
share? and have you set up logins for the users on the 'other' machine?
There are ways of overriding these things via the security settings but the
default setup probably will require you to do this - otherwise you will be a
'Guest' user and horribly restricted. e.g. one machine here has the login
jjay and I have set up an account jjay on the networked machine also.

good luck ...

Yes, I have an account on both computers with the same
name and log-in p/w. This is getting really frustrating
as I had no problem when I had an XP machine and a WinMe
machine. Thanks for your ideas pjay.

pjay et al,

I just ran net accounts from the Dos prompt and it shows
that both my computres are listed as workstations...is
this correct or should one be a server and if so how do I
make it so?

Mark,

Do you have shares setup on both computers?

Check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options - View -
Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro, you need to have the
SFS settings the same on each computer.

If SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

If you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers.
If "Classic", setup and use a common account with identical, non-blank, password
on all computers. But make the LSP the same on both computers.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Mark,

Sounds like you have the same problem I have, one
machine can access the other two, but they won't access
it.

I get the message:

"\\ (name) is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.

" Unable to impersonate using a named pipe until the data
is read from that pipe."

I wish they would have put that in hieroglyphics, at
least then I would have had a fighting chance of finding
someone who understands the message!

Dale,

Sorry for the length of the URL, but this is a Google retrieval. The "named
pipe" error has come up before.
