networking problem

My father and I have been trying, off and on, to network between our two
computers- neither one of us has had any luck at all. Though it reads on both
computers as having a network set-up, neither computer is able to read the
other computers files when they are shared. We have disabled their respective
firewalls, have made sure that all the names and settings are synchronous
when they need to be, and basically have followed any advice that was readily
available to us... the older computer will simply only read from it's shared
files. (originally, the accounts had the same names, but we did change this
and nothing has happened). Basically, we are out of ideas, and if somebody
could throw something out it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
john

Unless the firewall software on the computers is the Windows XP firewall,
the first thing you need to do is uninstall (rather than disable) the
software until you get your network up and running. As many others here
have found out, simply disabling most firewalls doesn't reverse the changes
they make to the local network.

I'm having a similar problem. I've followed Carey's directions, and they
did not solve the problem.

My desktop runs XP Home, V5.1, SP 2. When I try to share folders or my
printer from the desktop, the error I get is "An error occurred while trying
to share the folder. The server service has not started".

When I try to share the printer, the error message is: "Printer settings
could not be saved. The operation could not be completed".

I don't have a firewall installed. Both my desktop and laptop can access
the internet, but they can't share files or the printer. The two machines
can ping each other.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
