Hi,
In order to find out what hotfix is needed we need to
have a look at the event log in more detail. Could you
please do the following:
1. Open Network Places so that an error is generated.
2. Open up event viewer (Control Panel > Performance &
Maintanence > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer)
3. Look for an error message that occured upto 2 minutes
ago (source will probably be 'explorer.exe').
4. Please provide me with the 'source' from the source
column and the error code (e.g source:explorer, Error
Code:1002)
Thanks, Luke.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I have researched the error code but
curiously there is no mention of a patch. Could you send
me the details of what you are told when you click 'send
error report' or could you e-mail me a screenshot of the
error report's result's page. Thanks, Luke.

Hi,
I think I have just found what you are looking for. The
patch you mention is only intended for use if you need it
so you must contact Microsoft Support Services to obtain
the patch. Intructions on obtaining this hotfix can be
found at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;831938

Please let me know if this fixes the problem, Luke.

yes this link is the same link it gave me when I sent the report. The trouble is I am having problems finding out what to go to in order to get the hotfix from microsoft

yes this is the link it gave me when I sent the report in. Unfortunately I could not find the right place to go to,to ask for the hotfix.it was a really confusing site that popped up when i clicked on the link the crash analysis gave me.
(sorry if i keep double-posting but it keeps saying that an error has occurred and it will be investigated)

Hi,
I know how confusing the pages can be. Here's what you
need to do:
1. Go to 'www.microsoft.com/support'
2. Choose the 'contact Microsoft'link
3. Choose 'ask a support Q online'
4. Choose 'submit a request for help'
5. Then, click on 'ask a Microsoft support pro for help'
6. Choose 'the problem occurs in this computer'
7. On the next page choose Windows XP as the product
8. On the next page you may be asked to clarify between
IE and XP, choose windows XP
9. In your message to Mirosoft explain the problem and
tell them that you have been advised by crash analysis to
get the hotfix. Include the following info as well:

10. Send off your request.
Microsoft will send you a link where you can download the
the hofix as well as the password you will need to be
able to install the hotfix once you have downloaded it.
Let me know if anything is unclear and how you get on,
Luke.

hey sorry but im stuck on step 3. i cant find a link anywhere to "ask a s support Q online". my only options are as follows:{ 1.Phone Numbers, Support Options and Pricing
2). Submit a Request for Online Help
3).Support Lifecycle & Policies
4).Send Feedback About This Microsoft Support Web Site
5).Microsoft Wish
these are my only options.

hey i have followed all of the steps to step 8. it asked me to put in a product ID number. it showed me how to do it and i put it in and now this is what it is telling me: Microsoft Online Assisted Support

Enter a Product ID number

The Product ID number you entered is for a product that was purchased under an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) license agreement. Under this agreement, the original manufacturer of your computer provides your primary support.
You may contact your OEM for support or choose another Microsoft support option.
Show me OEM contact information…
now what?

Hi,
Since your OS was provided with your PC I think you have
2 options;
1. Contact the company that provided your PC and ask them
to pass your message on to Microsoft.
2. Obtain a Microsoft support number from
www.microsoft.com/support and tell them about your
situation

Let me know how you get on, Luke.

My PC is a Sony Vaio so I have sent Sony an email describing everything to them. I am now waiting for their response. I will let you know what happens, thanks!
