Networking problem/Question XP/98

Hi.

I have just bought a new machine pre-loaded with WXPhe. My old computer has
Win98se. I have bought a hub and the necessary cables to network them
together. I ran the network wizard in XP and immediately saw the workgroup
and the xp machine appear in the "network places" window. I also ran the
wizard on the 98 machine from the XP cd. The 98 machine immediately saw
itself in the "network neighborhood" window.
Unfortunately they do not see each other! Are there any of you who have
ideas about how to get these two OS's to cooperate and work together. I am
quite frustrated at this point and would certainly appreciate any help
anyone might offer.

First, when you ran the wizard on both machines did you make sure that any
firewalls and other security software was disabled?

Second, during the wizard, there is a place where the user is asked how this
computer connects to the Internet. An incorrect response will prevent the
PCs on the network from seeing each other. Since you purchased a hub, you
likely responded with "network hub." If that's the case, re-run the wizard
and try the "Gateway" response. "Gateway" is usually the correct response
under the scenario you describe.

Assuming the cables are NOT crossover cables, as you have a hub (which you
didnt need for just two computers), here is how to network them and have
them both see Internet, too:

First off, find and get rid of any NETBEUI which may be around - it will
only be on the 98 machine.

Next, TCP/IP only on:

1) Computer connected directly to Internet. Assuming your ISP has auto
config, grab their DNS numbers, allow the ISP to assign IP auto unless you
have to have a static IP in which case fill that number in. In the DNS
section for that same ISP, fill in the DNS numbers. Now go to ADVANCED tab
and click on to "allow other network users to connect through this
computer's internet connection". Note that the network must be ENABLED to
see this option. On the LAN side of the same computer, call it 192.168.0.1
with subnet 255.255.255.0 and make sure firewalls to both ISP and LAN are
off on all machines for now.

2) Computer connected to LAN and not directly to Internet. Assign it as
192.168.0.2 same subnet. Install 192.168.0.1 as gateway in order to allow it
to find out how to get OUT to internet and enable DNS and fill in the DNS
numbers of your ISP.

Now, the machine on the lan knows where to find the DNS server and also
Internet. Note to make sure after all this is done, reboot both machines,
make sure firewalls are off and then see if you can see the other machines
and internet on both machines, which you will if your LAN hardware is
working OK.

Hi,

I cannot say that I am particular about this method, as the computer
connecting to the Internet directly will not do routing services; and, I
have this same problem only I have a router on my network going to my cable
modem.

I here is a description of my similar problem:

I have two XP Pro desktops. Neither can see eachother.

One connects via Linksys Wireless to the WAP, the other is hard wired to the
WAP (has a 4 port hub). Both can get to the web. Both can see the
SnapServer (hard wired to WAP hub). Both see themselves; only cannot see
eachother.

I have a friend that has the same problem using a Microsoft WAP + 4-Port hub
too. Two XP computers cannot see eachother.

The Wizard has been run on all computers choosing Residential Gateway to no
avail. I even went as far as installing NetBeui on all computers to see if
that would override the TCP/IP, but that didn't help either.

All Windows Updates are current on all machines.

What am I missing?
