I am trying to move files from my old laptop to the new one.
I was trying to do this by connecting the loptops with a crossover
cat5 cable.
First, your two computers must be in the same workgroup, as already
mentioned. You could use the default workgroup of WORKGROUP, or choose any
name that you like.
Each computer must have its own IP address. You can use DHCP to assign
these addresses, or you can manually enter them.
In Windows 2000, right-click My Network Places and choose Properties. A
window will appear and should show Local Area Connection. Right-click that
and choose Properties. Click Internet Protocol and choose Properties. Here
you can enter the IP addresses manually. 192.168.0.1 for computer 1 and
192.168.0.2 for computer 2, etc ....
If you choose to DHCP to automatically assign the addresses, you would want
to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the main computer. On the
secondary computer you would then choose 'Obtain an IP address
automatically' in the Internet Protocol dialog box above.
This will explain Internet Connection Sharing, which will also setup DHCP
addressing for you.
