networking notworking!!

N.Paterson

Hi to one and all...

Okay here is the deal...
One PC running ME and another PC running XP. Both have the ethernet cards
installed and the lights on the back of them are flashing away. I have set
up my network. The workgroup is MSHOME as recommended. Now... the pc's can
see themselves on the network but not each other. But, on the XP machine
there is the icon that says "Connected to LAN 100.Mbps", so they are
connected but not speaking to each other!!!!
I have them on similar I.P addresses and both on the same workgroup, but
still no joy.
Does anyone have any ideas? Any help or suggestions are appreciated...

Thanks for your time,

Nathan.

Nathan,

How are the two connected? Crossover cable? Hub / switch / router?
Did you try pinging each from the other? If a router, can you ping
the router?

Can each see itself in My Network Places - Entire Network - Microsoft
Windows Network?

Install Aida from http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php
Run a report against Network, and publish the reports (in text) for
both computers here.

Cheers,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,
thanks for replying...

I am using a crossover cable, no router/hub/switch... and each computer can
see itself in :My Network Places/Entire Network/Mshome... which is the name
of the workgroup that they are both on.
I am stuck...

Any ideas?

Nathan.

A few possibilities come to mind.

The netmasks need to agree.

I've read reports that some NICs don't work well with crossover cables.
The status lights on the NICs might be helpful for determining that.

The two machines will need to have the same user account as well as
workgroup in order to authenticate an attach (although I would have
thought each could still detect the existence of the other even if
attachment was logically impossible).

Can you ping one machine from the other? If so, perhaps you don't
have WINS via DHCP selected (if it can be deselected in ME and XP --
I don't use those, so don't know for sure). Without some means for
name discovery, the machines won't find one another.

Unix is SO much easier!

Nathan,

"ipconfig /all >test.txt" from each computer, then cut and paste
test.txt for each computer into here. That will give us the ip
characteristics of each.

Better would be Network report from Aida, which will show Windows
Networking settings as well as ip settings. But start with ipconfig.

CJT has a point - some network cards might not work well with
crossover cables. You might be better off getting a switch or router
- certainly a NAT router would be better in the long run. You're a
sitting duck on the internet without one. They're too cheap to not
use, considering the consequences. Don't get a Belkin tho. ;(

A switch or router would have connect lights that would identify any
connection problem.

Try another crossover cable if you don't want to get a switch or
router. Always possible that the cable could be bad. And post some
network details.

Cheers,

Chuck

Well I heard that ME has a big problem with networking...
I thought if the OS' are the same then they would co-operate a bit better.

The one time I set up a machine with ME, it was about the same
amount of hassle as any other variety of Windows.

Nathan,

There should be no problem sharing files between any Microsoft OSs -
Win9x, WinME, WinNT, Win2K, WinXP. Within limits.

You say the two have "similar I.P addresses". That's a good start.

You say that "on the XP machine there is the icon that says "Connected
to LAN 100.Mbps"". That simply tells you that there is a network
cable connected to the network controller. Now you have to be sure
that the networking software is installed and working, and ditto the
system network.

Then you have to do the same for the ME computer.

The best way to start is from the ipconfig output. Then some
additional tests.

Please start by running "ipconfig /all >test.txt", and attaching
test.txt, from both computers.

Cheers,

Chuck

Oh, you got that right!
I once set up a tiny network of 3 computers... One win 95 machine and 2 old
DOS machines... (think ver 6.x)
Just one problem: No master browser... But since I knew where I wanted to
get with the 95 machine that was no big deal..
Just saying, even the old school stuff has its uses!

I had a network running Win 98SE, Win 95B, Win 3.11, MSDOS, and linux, all
talking to each other.
