Where can I find a list of server error messages?

When I use BROWSTAT with my XPSP2 unit I keep getting Errors 5, 53 and
121

Status for domain HOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{B47C52A8-0FE7-461D-83C
5-916105A611F7}
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: PIV24GHZ
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master PIV24GHZ
\\PIV24GHZ
Unable to retrieve server list from PIV24GHZ: 121

As a result other units can not connect to this one - I get "Workgroup
not accessible" etc error messages.

Thanks

Dmitri,

The best way to research these error messages starts from
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows/default.mspx>, and use the Search window in
the upper right.

For error 5, for instance, start from that web page, and search for "error 5".
You'll find "Access Denied".

Error 53, OTOH, is file or path not found. Error 121 is invalid file format -
don't know that one offhand.

Dmitri, networking Windoze computers is a lot of fun. Start from here:
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...db-aef8-4bef-925e-7ac9be791028&DisplayLang=en>

Want to work on this with me? Provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

Chuck - thanks - we went through this exercise with you already - and
you came to a conclusion that I might have Browsing issue.

I know how to use IPCONFIG command and you provided me with cdiag
script to run and we went through all settings:

1. Comps A and B can PING each other by IP and hostname.
2. They both see the router/gateway
3. A can see shares on B; B can not even see the workgroup
4. They are both in the same workgroup
5. There is identical user ID on both units.
6. Simple file sharing is enabled on both
7. Windows Firewall is disabled on both.
8. Comp A has ZoneAlarm and Norton Antivirus installed - I removed
both programs and cleaned registry of their entries - still to no
success - so we can surmise that these two are not the culprit.
9. NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on both.
10. Right now Computer Brwosing service is enabled on both: if I
disable it on B - it can not even see workgroup; with CBS running B
can at least see workgroup, but can not access A.

I see a lot of complaints about this issue after people install SP2 -
there is got to be some solution from M$.

When I run BROWSTAT on both units I get the errors 5, 53 and 121 -
with varying verbage; mainly something about not being able to connect
to registry.

What I really want to do is add peripherals attached to A so that B
can print to them.

I am attaching a network diagram for you to see better what I mean.

Thanks

What I noticed is that I have multiple names when I run NBTSTAT
command:

C:\Documents and Settings\DK>nbtstat -n

Local Area Connection:
Node IpAddress: [192.168.1.100] Scope Id: []

NetBIOS Local Name Table

Name Type Status
---------------------------------------------
PIV24GHZ <00> UNIQUE Registered
GSA02 <00> GROUP Registered
PIV24GHZ <20> UNIQUE Registered
GSA02 <1E> GROUP Registered
GSA02 <1D> UNIQUE Registered
..__MSBROWSE__.<01> GROUP Registered

Could this be a problem and how do I remedy that?

Dmitri,

This is normal information from nbtstat.
<http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...0/server/reskit/en-us/prork/pref_tts_pjtk.asp>

I looked at your network diagram - I remember seeing that before, but I don't
remember what resolution we got eventually. And the original discussions have
expired from the news server that I use. Also, it's after the holidays and my
brain still hasn't recovered (I had my Mom visiting me for over a month so give
me a break).

From your latest problem report, I'm betting that your Master Browser setup is
still not as polished as it could be. For a complex network like yours, you may
need to rethink what browsers you use. The answers may be in here:
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

Browsing depends upon anonymous access. Look at registry key
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value restrictanonymous, on
PIV24GHZ.

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.
