Hi,

I have the following problem with my PC regarding my internet connection and
I have tried several ways to get round this problem with no success.

What I have setup is:

PC with XP
Network card
Router – connecting to internet

I have also tried connecting the PC to router with USB but the same problem
occurs, and I have ruled out the router being the problem as I have tried
three routers all of which work fine on other machines

The problem is after several minutes online Internet explorer will start
showing “page cannot be found†message, to resolve the problem the computer
must be restarted, I then used command line to PING the router and this
worked fine so I went back online and the same problem occurred so I PINGED
the router again and no packets where received, I assume the problem is
within the PC regarding comms setup??

Please help

Thanks

hey how are you ,
as far as i got your problem there should be the problem with you NIC
(network interface card) first try changing it ( call network admin) for that
other thing you can do that go the websites that measures the internetspeed
and connection timeouts other thing is also check cables and connecter at
port if that is not working then u can change the cable also your problem
with totally hardware nothing to do with the OS

First of all thank you for your response.

I take it you mean the network card when you mention the NIC, if the problem
was with this device then how would that explain the same problem using a USB
cennection to the Router?

i also forgot to mention that i have tried the internet at different
locations at work and at home using different broadband accounts and the same
problem occurs

Both the NIC and the USB ports have the following option:

Open Device Manager, open the properties on your ethernet card, click
the Power tab, and deselect "Allow the computer to turn off this device
to save power".

Something else to try:

Flush DNS

Click Start, Run, type:

IPConfig /FlushDNS [Press Enter key]

Thanks, i have a feeling IPConfig /FlushDNS is going to work but i wont be
able to find out till this evening, losing DNS would explain why web pages
aren't displayed but downloads continue.

Only thing is if this does resolve the problem will i have to do this every
time it goes wrong or is this a permant remedy?

Oh and another thing is doesn't the router store the DNS?? if so then why
would the DNS setting be fine on one PC but not another?(using same broadband
account)

You could create a batch file and leave it on the desktop. Then
double-click it when needed.. That would certainly be easier than a
restart. But it was intended as a test to see if that locates the problem.
