Hi:
I'm new to routers and networking but not to computers in general.
I will be building 2 new computers that I'll need to add to the
network to share the internet connection, files and maybe my printer
and scanner if it can be done.

So far:
WinXP HE SP2 retail
Alcatel STHome ADSL external modem
Linksys EtherFast wired Cable/DSL Router w/4-Port Switch #BEFSR41
Asus P4T533-C i850e/s478 on-board LAN
Epson Stylus Photo R300 USB 2.0 printer
Canon D1250U2F USB 2.0 scanner

I've just added the router (1st time) and it went ok. TCP/IP was
already there and the install seemed easy enough.
ISP uses dynamic IP. I just use the same desktop connectoid. PPPoE.

I will be buiding my new main system soon:
WinXP Pro SP2 OEM
On-board LAN from Asus A8N-SLi PREMIUM nForce4
The above printer and scanner moved to it.
Add it to the network.

Once done, I'll build the 2nd system
MS MCE2005 (WinXP Pro SP2)
Also uses the same model motherboard and on-board LAN
Will have to install the Rollup2 + Rollup fix + .NET 1.1 SP1
Add it to the network.

I use the freebie ZoneAlarm firewall to check on outbound traffic but
know to disable it and check double-check that the MS one is disabled
when changing/adding to network connections. Ditto for background
antivirus/spyware shielding.

I am the only person who will have access to and be using all three
rigs. I have no need to authorize myself for anything among the 3. :)
I've avoided the nuisance of manual logon user/password entry with the
bypass trick.
Since I will be seriously networking will I have to reverse that fix
and logon normally to all 3?

I've been to a few sites but they seem to just confuse me with
unixspeak and many things that I likely have no need to know. Arcane
permissions etc. Most of it also ends up referring to wireless too.

How should I go about doing all this?

TIA for any help/tips,

Fleabus,

I'll try not to burden you with unixspeak, but I'll ask you to consider learning
things that you (previously) had no need to know. Since you're asking for
advice here, I'm hoping that you will understand the need for learning new
things.

First, spend some time learning about physical and IP networking. Then about
Windows Networking. And finally, about diagnosing and solving network problems.

Finally, please describe your problem - why are you here? What specifically are
you trying to do, and what error or problem are you observing? Or what exactly
do you not understand? With this knowledge, someone here is more likely to help
you actually resolve your problem, or at least the symptoms that concern you.
