Hi,

I'm having great difficulty getting Windows XP networked
with Windows 98. I'm using a crossover cable and my
hardware has no conflicts.

I get a message saying I do not have enough rights to view
the network, even if I am part of the Administrators group.

The networking wizard does not resolve the prolem. I'm not
using a domain controller, just a common workgroup.

I need some help!

Thomas

Greetings Thomas,

Make sure the XP's firewall is disabled while troubleshooting. It will block
file and printer sharing by default. If you are running any third party
firewall such as ZoneAlarm, Sygate, or Norton Internet Security, make sure
it is properly configured and not blocking access between the machines.
Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all machines. Details here.

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

I spent hours trying to get a connection between xp and 98se in the end I
used
free proxy software which got round it

btw I never did persuade a laptop running ME to work

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the answers.

I'll try to remove McAfee Firewall from the network
connection. I've started the Computer Browser service and
enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP but still get the following
error message:

Workgroup Name is not accessible. You may not have
permission to use this network resource.

This happens even when I unplug the network cable. The
computer cannot see itself!

Thomas

Thanks Derek.
