networking a printer

I have two laptops running XP with a Bt Voyager wireless router. I want to
connect a printer so that both machines can access the printer independently
ie both can connect without the other laptop being switched: so not using
printer sharing. Can I plug a switch into the router (it only has one port,
BT being cheapskates !) and plug the printer into a USB network adapter then
plug the adapter into the switch? Would both laptops then have access?
Sorry if this seems pretty obvious but I'm not a network expert.

Yes you can plug a switch into the router using an Ethernet cable.
Depending on the switch and router, you might have to connect the
cable to an uplink port on one of them.

Then, get a wired USB print server, which can connect your printer
directly to the network switch for use by both computers. Here are
ones that I use, and there are many others available at computer and
office stores:
