Networking 2 WinXP PCs using ICS not working....

Sorry if this is an old one. I cannot get ICS to work.

Initially I was going to connect a cable modem to a router and share
the connection between to WinXP machines. Couldn't get this to work.
So decided to share via ICS instead with a crossover cable.

So, I have two pcs running WinXP home. I have a cable modem supplying
an onboard nic and that connection works. I have also in this machine
a Realtec RTL 8139 NIC that is connected to the other PCs Netgear FA311
NIC via a crossover cat5e cable.

I run ICS but it fails and says it cannot complete. I have tried
manually setting the ip address of the Realtec to 192.168.0.1 and am
not sure about DNS and Gateway settings. Have tried some including the
192.168.0.1 but to no effect.

I set the other PCs nic to get the ip address automatically using dhcp
(i think) and set its DNS to be the realtecs 192.168.0.1 and the
gateway the same. However the client machines nic is using a private
ip address of 169.254.118.58. Clearly it is not getting its ip address
fromthe host machine.

Can anybody help. What am i doing wrong here. I feel i am on the
verge of understanding this!!

Martin.

Using a router should be easier to set up and more reliable than using
ICS.

Have you actually enabled ICS? Just configuring IP addresses, DNS,
and gateway isn't enough.

Right-click the network connection that connects to the cable modem,
click Properties | Advanced, and put a check mark in the box "Allow
other network users to connect through this computer's Internet
connection". If there's also a box saying "Select a private network
connection", click the arrow and select the connection that uses the
Realtek NIC.
