I`m networking 2 XP computers but only on one of the computers (#1) can I
see *and* access files of the other computer (#2).
On computer #2 I can *see* shared files and printer of computer #1, but can
*NOT* access shared files (Printer is available!).

I get an error message saying:
(shared folder) "is not accessable. You might not have permission to use
this Network Resource. Contact administrator of the server to see if you
have permission".
And then below this message:
"Not enough server storage is available to process this command".

Anyone know what this message is trying to tell me? I have recently built a
new computer and now I am trying to Network it.

Any insight into this matter would be greatfully appreciated.

Thanks for your kind response to my question, however I use AVG Free
Anti-Virus software and do not use the (two) Anti-Virus mentioned in you
M.S. link!

I`m sure it has to do with some setting of mine, but not sure which one or
where to start. I thought perhaps the error message might provide someone a
clue?

I have a NAT Hardware Firewall (Netgear) Router along with Windows XP
Firewall setup with File Sharing set as an exception. Trusted Zone??

Matt

Is one machine running XP Pro and the other XP Home? I have ssen this when
Home is involved.
One thing to check is, on the computer that can't be accessed by th eother
one, in Windows Explorer go to Tools/folder options and select the "View"
tab, check that the "Simple File sharing option" is set and if not set it to
that and try connecting from the remote computer. If not switch it to
unticked and then set permissions to either allow a specific user to access
the folder or just set "Everyone Full Control" assuming you are behind a
firewall and you trust the other computer implicitly.

The other thing to check is that both computers are in the same workgroup XP
home by default puts the newly installed PC into the MSHOME workgroup
whereas Pro puts it into "WORKGROUP" workgroup. They should both be the
same.

Thanks "Siv", for your reply to my question.

Both computers are XP Home! Also, I dont see "Simple File sharing option"
checkbox
in Windows Explorer under Tools/folder option/View.

Matt

That may be your problem (Home is a bit crippled when it comes to
networking, you just don't get these problems with Pro) it's the good ol'
marketing machine at M$ at work again. They only want you to use Home as a
standalone OS and use Pro if you want to network them together. One pain
with home is that you don't get the option to save a user name and password
when you log into a remote share, you do with pro and from then on it
doesn't ask you again, with home you have to put the password back in every
time you visit that share in a different session of Explorer.

I would ensure that both machines have shares set up even if on one of them
you really don't need it, this will ensure the modern day equivalent of
"File and Printer Sharing" is enabled in your TCP/IP stuff. Try again after
that and se if it will connect.

Did you check they are both in the same workgroup by the way??

Matt,
Another thought, are you using Norton Internet Security with its firewall
turned on or some other firewall software like ZoneAlarm as this may block
access to other network machines until you add the IP Addresses of the
network into the trusted zone.

Most firewall software has a section in the Firewall part that allows you to
set up "Trusted" and "Non-trusted" zones, thuis if you haven't added your
network into the trusted zone the firewall will treat it as untrusted an
block it.

Normally you will be using 192.168.0.1 up to 192.168.0.254 as your range or
it might be 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 depending on your router or how
Windows configured itself if not using a router fo rinternet access and
DHCP.

Basically you can find out what IP Addreses your machines are using by
opening a command prompt (Start/Run type "cmd" and pres OK) then in the dos
prompt type IPConfig /All and it will list the active network adapters and
what IP Addresses they are using, if you are using a network card rather
than a wireless network card you'll get something like this:

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : bigblue
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce Networking
Controller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-18-09-8B-2C-87
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.100.9
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.100.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.100.1

As you can see my IP Address is 192.168.100.9 with subnet mask of
255.255.255.0
In my firewall I would put the start of the range of trusted IP Addresses to
be: 192.168.100.1 and the ending range would be 192.168.100.254, you might
make it a smaller closing range if you know you will never have more that 2
PCs in your network, so it would be:

Start: 192.168.100.1
End: 192.168.100.5

Allowing you 5 computers or 4 computers and your router on 192.168.100.1.

I hope this all helps.

I have a NAT (hardware Firewall) Netgear Router, AVG Free Anti-Virus (*NO*
Norton of any flavor), and also WinXP Firewall, but have File Sharing set as
an exception! Both computers are setup on same MSHOME workgroup!
One thing that does puzzel me however (and I dont know if its relavant) is
the Computer Name on Computer #1 is *mattswinxp* while under Workgroup
Computers (and as viewed on computer #2) the *M* is capitalized !! Like I
said I dont know if this matters or what but at this point Im considering
anything.

Matt

I would try disabling the XP firewall (for a short time) and see if that
unblocks things, if it does, then you know that is the cause of the
problems, you are pretty safe behind the Netgear NAT firewall from the
internet, it would only be if you had a trojan infection on either of your
PCs that were sending stuff outbound, the netgear will stop any inbound
stuff.

I would check that, both machines have the same user defined and use
this particular user common to both machines, to access the resources
on the other machine. Also If I remember correctly (I do not have an
XP home to check) , on the properties of the shared folders under the
sharing section there should be a check box about "letting other users
to change or modify my files" or words to that effect.

Here is the problem (I think?)!!
I`m on computer #1 (Computer #2 is offline), I click on "View Workgroup
computers", I then see same (sole) Computer #1 Asus (Mattswinxp).
I then click to open Computer #1 Asus (Mattswinxp), and I am presented with
all the shared Folders/Printers and Faxes etc. on this computer (#1)
I then click to open a "Shared Folder" in computer #1 and I get this same
error message as before : "\\Mattswinxp\SharedDocs is not accessable". "You
might not have permission to use this network resource." "Contact the
administrator etc." "Not enough server storage is available to process this
command".

First off, I am the administrator of this same (#1) computer, and I *CAN*
open this same shared folder when under "My Network Places" Local Network
!!
Can someone explain to me what is wrong here?

Good Starting Point.

Since both are XP Home, both are using Simple File Sharing, since that's
all home can do.

Easiest fix is to run the Network Setup Wizzard on each machine. On the
WORKGROUP NAME page, be sure to enter the same name; it will always
default it to MSHOME if you don't change it, which is fine. This wizzard
will make sure that all necessary services are running. Once working,
each machine should be able to see the other's Shared Documents Folder;
browse downward thru the Network Neighborhood->entire
network->workgroup->machine->shares.

My problem with file sharing has been solved!
After posting my problem on numerous groups and sites, I finally got an
answer that was specific to my problem.

It seems that the "not enough server storage" was the tip off to the
problem, which necessitated
a registry fix! This problem is known as 'IRP Stack Size Bug"
M.S. has a KB article on this problem.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;177078

Somehow (usual suspect is Norton AV) my default settings under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
and then IRP Stack Size were *changed*, and I had to manually set them back
to default(decimal 15).

Anyway, after *Malke* at Elephant Boy Computers clued me in on to this fix,
I am *NOW* able to access *all* my shared files on my Network!!

The odd part of this is, I dont use Norton Anti-Virus and previously ignored
that M.S. help file.

Thanks again for all the replies and I hope this post can help someone else
having similar difficulties in File Sharing (with XP Home).

You're very welcome for my 'kind response', the one that would have solved
your dilemma two days ago <g>
Glad to hear that you got your file sharing to work.
