Network Win98 to XP with crossover cable with no internet:

I am trying to transfer files from my old computer with Win 98 2nd ed. to my
new computer with Win XP Home. I am not wanting to access internet with this
network.
I just want to be able to transfer files and access documents and files on
my old computer. So I guess the XP computer is the guest(?) and the 98old the
host(?)

Anyway, long story short I need to know how to set up each computer so that
they will talk to each other using only an ETHERNET cable connection

You want a peer-to-peer network; host and client don't figure in.
Run the Network Setup Wizard (Home Networking Wizard in 98SE) found at
Start: Accessories: Communications

The crossover cable should work fine; has for me for four years. Many
people will insist you need a switch or a hub but you don't.

Hey John, Thanks for the reply. I went to run the Home networkingwiz but I
don't seem to have one on my 98SE machine.

There used to be some NICs that did not get along with crossover cables.
If you happen to run into problems, try setting the NICs on each PC for
the settings that are most likely to work: disable auto-negotiation and
set both NICs to 10 Mb/s HDX.

When you run the Wizard on the XP system it offers to make a floppy for the
other system. Go ahead and make a floppy and carry it to the 98 system and
run Netsetup from there. I think that will get you up and running.

Bob,
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately this is my first attempt at networking
and I'm not sure where to go to change the NIC settings. I've been all over
the map trying to figure this out and I don't recall seeing where I can
change those settings.
A shove in the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks again for your time

I finally took the advice and followed to the letter from
www.careyholzman.com/net1.htm site and it worked like a charm. The only thing
I need to mention is to make sure you right click on the Dirive you want to
share and set the file sharing attribute there as well. But it does work!!

Good Luck

I found the articles extremely good and carried out all the instructions for
my 98SE PC but at the end when it said that the installation disk would be
asked for, in my case it did not happen. All it said was you will have to
restart the PC.
And I still get a message when I look at the network which says "Unable to
browse the network. The network is not accessible"
In my case I am trying to access the Internet as well and my XP is the
host.
Any suggestions?
Blair

The installation disc may not be required, depending on the current
configuration of the PC during the setup.

Please email me to discuss this in a more efficient manner.

I meant to say that my problem was I still had Zone Alarm installed but on
your advice I uninstalled it which solved the problem
What I want to know now is can I reinstall Zone Alarm without upsetting the
network?
Regards
Blair

Any real firewall (don't use XP's) will have a trusted zone. Normally the
NIC is set to internet zone. What you need to add is a trusted zone (most
likely the IP Range 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.255).
