I have a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop running xp home and I have 3 other pcs on xp home on a linksys wired router
I can ping by name and by ip address. The laptop can access all pcs and view files on them. But the other 3 pcs can't access the laptop. They can see the name but can't access. All are not firewalled and the laptop has folders being shared. By the way 2 weeks ago all was fine. But there was a problem pinging. The network did work while pinging was not right. Which leads me to believe that something i downloaded changed something and now is blocking access. Also I have a program called 3m post-it notes (office). and 2 weeks ago it wouldn't work. Thats when networking was fine. I went on vacation and came back and plugged my laptop in. Thats when my problem started. I reset the router and the dsl modem. Also I uninstalled norton internet security. And that fixed the post-it problem but not the networking one. I've tried a few things concerning the registry and ad and spyware. Another thought after tcp/ip version 6 was installed it caused a yellow flag (that will be my next project) in device manager when i uninstall it the flag goes away. Could that have caused my problem by leaving something there to block access

Racsan,

In addition to Norton Internet Security, are you using Norton Antivirus? I
advised in one case where un install of NAV (after un install of NIS) was
necessary to get file sharing working.

You also might consider installing NIS again, activating it, then either
configuring it or un installing it. If NIS was un installed while disabled, it
might not have un installed properly.

If this is a wired network, I recommend you install and activate NIS, then
configure it properly with your subnet defined in the Local / Trusted Zone. If
necessary, you then need to open ports TCP 139, 445 and UDP 137, 138, 445 for
Local Zone only.

IPV6 is another challenge. I'd definitely un install that until file sharing is
working.

Cheers,
Chuck

Racsan,

OK, let's try some diagnosis.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify each ipconfig with OS name and version.

From each computer, verify connectivity:
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by name.
4) Ping itself by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping the router.
Report success / failure of each of 12 pings.

Did you follow all of Symantec un install procedures? Did you try re
installing, enabling, and configuring as specified?

Cheers,
Chuck

Racsan,

Which is the problem laptop? Jerrys, Racsan, Sines? Do you have shares setup
on all laptops?

What error do you get when you "can see the name but can't access"?

Cheers,
Chuck

Racsan is the Laptop PC that only the name can be seen. All other PC's are desktops
Yes I am sharing one folder on the laptop and its not under c its under a different drive
Laptop firewall is shut off. The error I get is "\\Racsan is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission. Access is denied

Thanks Chuc

Racsan,

What firewall is on Racsan? Was that NIS? Did you shut it off, or did you un
install it? Did you un install it while it was shut off? Try re installing
then configuring it.

Check your Guest password on all computers - make it identical and non-blank.

There is no firewall on Racsan. I had NIS in and had it configured still no luck left it on and uninstalled it still no luck
As far as the Guest goes if you mean in control panel users. All PC's in network have Guest shut off. And before
wrote this to you I turned Racsan's on and still no luck

Racsan,

Did you use the Symantec un install tools for removing NAV and NIS?

On the chance that you did download something that damaged your network
software, download and try LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFIx from
<http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>.

I did myself install IPv6 on one of my computers; I ended up removing it (don't
remember why), but as I recall it un installed with no after effects.

Try swapping router ports (and network cables) with another computer.

Checkout your pinging ability. Get Ping Plotter (free) from
http://www.pingplotter.com/. Install it on the problem computer, and on one of
the others. Make them ping each other.

See if the static route tables offer any clue. Please provide static route
tables for the problem computer, and for one of the others.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "route print >c:\route.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\route.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

On the chance that you downloaded something that you shouldn't have, do a
spyware check.

First, download CWShredder from <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>.

Next, close all Internet Explorer and Outlook windows, then run CWShredder.
Have it fix all variants.

Now check for, and remove, spyware. Get HijackThis
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155> and Spybot S&D
<http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download>. Both free.
1) Install and run Spybot. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a
scan ("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and make all recommended deletions.
2) Install and run HijackThis. Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.
3) Have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the following
forums (and post it here):
