network sharing drive problem

Hi,

I have 3 PCs (NTB1, PC1 and PC2). they work in workgroup.
since i've installed an anti-spyware and updated my firewall on my NTB1, PC1 and PC2 are not able to access to any of the NTB1 shared resources.
However, NTB1 is able to get access to PC1 and PC2 shared resources.

I've checked if it was not my firewall, so i desactivated it and also the windows XP default firewall.
But nothing changed.
I still have the message that i do not have permission rights access to the shared resources.

Does someone have a procedure to debug/detect problem location ?
i need something like "step by step"

thx,
Maileen

It might not be this but it's easy to check...

Note the time and try and access the share to provoke the error message.
Then go to the PC hosting the share and look in the event log for errors
around the time noted. See if there is an entry telling you the irpstacksize
is too small. If there is then...

I believe this problems may be due to Norton Antivirus S/W but perhaps other
causes?

Norton have this advisory (long URL may wrap to new line and need repair)

http://service1.symantec.com/suppor...88256d03005eb145?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

and Microsoft have this one..

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;106167

The above only mention the error message being "Not enough server
storage...". I also found it can also give access permission errors
(something like "Access denied" or "Insufficient acesss", I can't remember
exactly). These are really confusing to someone trying to set up a home LAN.

Here is what I found...

irpstacksize = 11 (dec) causes access permission errors.

irpstacksize = 13/14 the error changed to "Not enough server storage" or
similar.

irpstacksize = 15 and my network shares now work fine.

If you are using a package like Norton Internet Security then there is an
"Intrusion Detection" setting that prevents unwanted connections even with
your firewalls disabled. If you open the main Norton Security summary you'll
see it. Click the enrty and choose configure just to the right. In the
settings dialog, you can enter IP addresses (the pc with your shares) that
are considered safe. If that doesn't help nad your not running such
software...let me know exactly how you have them shared. Windows - to -
Windows....SMB - to -Windows...any priveleges you may have set and so on.
Good luck

Superb tip. I had the same scenario as the original poster and your most
helpful advice was spot on in diagnosing and fixing the problem.

Norton was on the server machine as well, but I ripped it out and switched
to F-Protect, however the registry setting was still set to Bx (decimal 11).
Changing it to Fx (15 decimal) cleared the problem right up and shares now
work properly.

Thanks for documenting this fix for us.
