network shares "access is denied" / "not enough server storage"

LDC

I have two machines both running Windows XP professional.
They are currently networked directly with each other ( no
switch etc) and I have several folders I would like to
copy form one to the other. However, although the machines
can adequately share an internet connection, they refuse
to share folders.
One machine can access the other via Network PLaces/
workgroup etc. But cannot access any of the folders on the
machine, being given the error "Not enough server storage
is available to process this command". The other machine
cannot even access its counterpart, let alone the folders,
and throws the error "Access is Denied". I have disabled
all firewalls on both computers, used the 'setup home or
office netowrk' function several times, and searched all
over for a solution, but found nothing. Any help would be
appreciated. This is particularly annoying, as I know the
two machines have networked in this way in the past.

This error indicates that you are falling foul of the IRPStackSize bug.

The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to,
not the machine where you see the error message.

On the computer you are attempting to connect to,
Check the event viewer for an event ID 2011.

Usual fix :
You need to fix a parameter called IRPStackSize

On the computer you are attempting to connect to,
Set the IRPStackSize back to the default (15 ).
Perform the following steps:

1. Start the registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\lanmanserver\parameters.
3. Double-click IRPStackSize
(or if this registry setting doesn't exist, create it of
type DWORD and ensure the case is correct).
4. Change the base to decimal, set the value to 15, and click OK.
5. Reboot the computer.

Norton AV is usual suspect for breaking it.

There's a KB article about this, too.

Thanks, this has resolved the connection issue from one
computer. However, the 'Access is Denied' from the other
persists. Is there anything I should look for in relation
to this?
Thanks once more in advance

Looks like a straightforward permissions issue.

On the machine you are attempting to connect to, ensure 'simple file
sharing' is enabled.

Then un-share any shared folders, and exit out of the sharing dialog.
Then re-share the folders.

That, I'm afraid, hasnt worked. I deactivated then
reactivated simple file sharing, then unshared and
reshared all the folders. I am still unable to view even
the folders within the computer from the network places.
The same 'access is denied' error appears every time i
double clikc the machine in the list. Thankyou for your
continuing assistance, further help would be gratefully
received.

Just check the Guest account is enabled on the uncontactable machine.
For Simple File Sharing, it ought to be enabled.

Without some 'hands on' the only other thing I can suggest is to
re-run the Network Setup Wzard on the uncontactable machine.

With any luck it will re-set the necessary
Guest Account / Share permissions / NTFS permissions.
