In trying to set up my network (Buffalo wireless and
cable, 3 computers all on XP Home) I cannot get one of
them to respond to a ping on the loopback address
127.0.0.1. It times out. This computer cannot see or be
seen on the network, yet it has been set up using the
Network wizard and the router software exactly as the
others. It can access the internet no problem. Any
ideas?

Paul,

What AntiVirus protection do you have?

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF or third party)? If so,
you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445 and
UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computers as present in the
Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of
(network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
