network setup

I attempted to setup a home network and failed. I noticed
the subnet mask read 255.255.0.0 for the "server" machine
while the written info indicates it should be
255.255.255.0. How can I overcome this? I do not know
how to manually override the system and my attempt to
setup the machine again and again provides the same
results.

we need more information to help. do you use dhcp or not? if not, just go to
the properties of the connection?tcp/ip to make the change.
