network set up on win xp

I have a new pc w/ win xp professional and an older pc w/ win xp home. I am
trying to set up a point to point network to transfer files from the old
system to the new one. I know nothing about networking. I tried the network
wizard but I don't know why it fails to hook up. Do I need hardware to
transfer files? I have a serial cable between both pc's but like I said
nothing works. Anybody have an answer for me? Thank you for any help.
