Hello All,

I have a slight XP file sharing issue.
I have 2 XP PRO based machines. One called Celeron and the other AMD (i
know, how geeky of me). Both machines are set up for File and Printer
Sharing as well as client for microsoft networks.

The problem is as follows :

1. The system named "Celeron" is able to access the C: drive (and applicable
folders ) on the AMD system.
2. When on The "AMD" system, going throu "my network places" I goto
workgroup and click on the celeron name.
I received the following dialog box :

" \\celeron is not accessible.You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have permissions.

The server service is not started. "

3. I went to control panel / administrative tools / services and saw that
the server service is indeed set for automatic and started ( i checked on
both pc's).

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Check to make sure that "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" and "Computer Browser"
services are running on both computers.

With two XP Pro systems you have the option of using two types of files
sharing. Simple File Sharing allows all users to use all the shared
files and printers. If you turn Simple File Sharing off, then you can
control exactly who can use each file and/or printer.

You should probably start with Simple File Sharing and then, if you have
the need, turn it off and use the more complicated Pro-type sharing. See
below for more details.

Are the firewalls turned on? If so, turn them off for now, get the
network running perfectly, then turn them back on. After you turn them
back on open up the sharing ports in the firewall settings. In XP
Service Pack 2, enable "File and Printer Sharing" in the Exceptions tab.
In XP Service Pack 1 or earlier, allow ports 139 & 445 (TCP) and 137 &
138 (UDP).

Someone else suggested making sure Computer Browser is turned on. I can't
find it. Is it only in XP Pro and not XP Home?

Well - Strange. I have it on both pro and home here.

Your remark about not being able to find it is one of two such remarks here
in just the last 17 messages.

There must be something in the xp install set up that puts it in the
services cue on some systems and not on others. Have you poked around the
Add\Remove Windows Components ?

Do you have the necessary protocols, clients, services installed at Set
Network Components Types? (Network connection properties)

Just go to Start | Run | and type 'services.msc', then hit return.

Thanks Ron - I read the post as meaning the author couldn't find the
service on the list. Not that he couldn't find the list.

I tried the suggestions given and it still does'nt work.
The error message returned is :

you have permissions.
The server service is not started.

I checked to see (in services on both PC's) that the Computer Browser and
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper services are started. I'm really at wits end here.
I've turned off the built in fire wall as well as SFS. I was able to access
the AMD system from the CELERON pc but not vice versa.
