We installed a networked camera. All computers except my
laptop can connect to the web page in Internet Explorer
to view the camera. My computer is set up the same as
all the other computers. I am able to ping, tracert,
ftp, and telnet the camera. In My Network Places, the
camera is listed, but can't be found when I double click
it. I have not updated to XP SP2 yet, so I don't think
there is anything that would be blocking my access to the
camera. It broadcasts the web page on the usual port 80
http. Any ideas what I could try?

Are there any problems with seeing other web pages on the
problem laptop?

Matt,

what exactly happens when you type the URL of the web camera,
i.e. something like http://xxx.yyy, into the address field of
Internet explorer? I'm not really sure whether you can open a
web server in My Network Places by double-clicking on it.

If you get an error message, please cite the most important
passage of that error message.

Hans-Georg

When I enter the address http://xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa, it
displays a page stating:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable.
The Web site might be experiencing technical
difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.

Matt,

that doesn't look like the address of your web camera. I
proposed to enter the URL of your web camera. Could you try
that, for a test?

Hans-Georg

The address of the camera is http://192.168.150.8.
That's what I entered when I got the error:

Matt,

ah, sorry for the misunderstanding! I didn't think of a
numerical URL (IP address).

Well, that's rather strange then. I take it that all other
computers can use the camera, that the problem laptop can load
all other web pages, so the only thing that doesn't work is that
this one particular computer cannot connect to this one
particular web site. Very strange indeed.

Things that flashed through my mind are Internet Explorer
settings, like unwanted proxy server settings, or perhaps this
address being put into an untrusted zone in the security
settings.

Can the camera only be accessed through that IP address or does
it also have a domain host name like http://camera.domain.com ?
Do you have any unwanted settings in the hosts or lmhosts files
(in system32\drivers\etc)? Is Internet Explorer up to date and
of the same version that other computers use? How about the
firewall? Have you switched it off for a test?

As you can see I don't really know what's going on between that
computer and the webcam.

Hans-Georg

I've tried all the things you suggested. The only
address for the camera is the numerical one. Proxy
settings are not configured at all. I am not running the
Windows Firewall. My computer has the same version of
MSIE as the other computers. Thanks for your help!

Matt,

then we may have to cast the net wider. A frequent problem is
adware, particularly the kind that wedges itself into the
Winsock. I'd recommend to work through
http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm, which has the procedures for
that case.

Adware can indeed cause such phenomena. It does rather funny
things.
