Dear group, let me tell you the set-up i have. I have 2 computers, both
running XP Pro, they are both connected by Ethernet cable to a combined
Modem/Router to a DSL line. Both computers independently access the Internet.

With that set-up is it possible to have one computer access the other for
transfering files and sharing data?

Martin,

Yes it's possible as long as they have the same IP subnet...

If you're using a router, I'm pretty sure it is. See if you have a IP like
192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x ... if you do... you should be fine.

So from here, I would recommend you go into your network connections
properties, go into the local area connection properties, and install a
protocol called IPX/SPX.

After installing, go into your SYSTEM properties (in control panel) and make
sure that you have a unique computer name for each computer, and you are in
the SAME workgroup. These names can be anything you want... if XP doesn't
like it.. it'll tell you. So you can name them: pc1 and pc2 respectively...
and you can call your workgroup HOME. Anything will work.

From here, you should be able to go into your My Network Places and see the
other computer.

TIP: a shortcut to accessing the other computer is to use START > RUN, then
type "\\" then the computer name. Example: \\pc1 ... make sure it's
BACKSLASH not forward slash.

Just some advice... let me know if it works... G'LUCK!

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

Hi there, i meant to say thank you for answering my question about
Networking. I did all you said and no luck! I scratched my head for a long
time and then hit on the answer. I use ZoneAlarm and i simply added the IP
address and subnet of each computer into the Trusted Zone and Hey Presto,,
it worked.
