Network Problems/Renewal?

I just replaced an MN-500 router that was wired to one computer and a Tivo
and connected wirelessly to two laptops and another desktop via a USB network
adapter. I never had problems with any of the machines as far as
connectivity. No matter what time of day or night I could jump online and do
whatever I needed with no problems. Now after I have a new router in place I
have a problem. The wireless machines and the Tivo still work round the clock
with no problems. however, the machine I have wired directly to it drops the
net connection if its inactive for a while. I will click on a bookmark and it
will say that it looking for a site and then say it cannot be found. If I
restart the computer, it fires up instantly and it is good to go as long as I
keep using it. Is this a leasing issue, is there a setting I should look for
in the routers setup and change it?

Looks like you have some hardware problems. Try using the repair function on
the internet connection. Sometimes that helps clear everything out and then
it may function properly. You don't have any software firewalls running
besides the one built into Windows XP?

Earl,

Does the problem computer have the most current drivers for the network card?

When this happens again, open a command window (Start - Run - "cmd"). Type
these two commands in sequence:
"ipconfig /release"
"ipconfig /renew"

Check the Power Management for the network card. Is "Allow the computer to turn
off this device to save power" enabled?

I ruled out the ethernet cards because the same thing happned whether or not
I was using the onboard LAN or the PCI card that came with the kit. The Power
Management is not checked and I'm wondering why I would have to release and
renew every time if indeed that ends up working when previously it never
needed that.

Thanks for the reply,

Earl

Are you using Zone Alarm? If so - I had a similar issue, the box I had
ethernet cabled would just lose its connection when it used to work 24/7. My
NIC was in the internet zone, I moved it to the trusted zone and I'm good
again.
