network problem

I got two computers, the desktop and the notebook, both
running Winx XP sp1a, connected through a cross cable.

Problem :
- The network works fine from the desktop. But from the
network I sometimes cannot see the desktop computer under
the Entire Network.
- Sometimes pinging from the notebook to the desktop
helps. After pinging I can browse the shared folders of
the desktop from the notebook.
- Sometimes restarting the notebook helps..
- Sometimes when I browse the entire network from the
notebook, an out-of-date list of folders are browsed. I
recognize the listing as the one when we first set up the
network weeks ago. This information is stored somewhere..

Everything was fine when we first set up the network. The
problem started after we had to format the desktop
computer and ran the Network setup wizard again.

I checked so far that :
- Both computers are under the same workgroup
- The IP's (192.168.0.X) and the subnet mask is OK
(255.255.255.0)
- The S,mple File Sharing is enabled on both computers
- The guest account is enabled thru Local User Manager
- ICF is disabled on both computers
- The NetBIOS is enabled over TCP/IP on both computers
- The Network Troubleshooter reports no problems !

ipconfig /all reports that the Node type is Mixed on the
notebook and Unknown on the Desktop. I don't know how to
fix this ..

Can anyone help ?

Hi
Before we go any further you may just want to look at the
following KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;308007
I know that you probably will have tried most of the
suggestions but just in case you haven't. If nothing
helps there then check that none of the network
connections have been bridged. A lot of people who have
had this problem have found that removing all protocols
and adding them back again have worked. I know you have
tried this but make sure that you have added the NWLINK
NetBIOS.
Let me know how you get on, Luke.

Thanks for reply..
I did them. Pinging works always.

I don't know how to remoce TCP/IP in Win XP. I just
noticed a link to an article referring to NetShell
utility. Perhaps this will help.
I didn't get what you mean by adding the NWLINK NetBIOS ?
What should I do ?

Hi,
With regards to the NWLink NetBIOS please try the
following:
1. Open the properties for your LAN connection
2. Remove all of the protocols, services and components
in the box on the properties page (you will not be able
to remove TCP/IP).
3. Then install the following:
-Client for Microsoft Networks
-File & Printer sharing....
(If the tope 2 alone don't fox the problem try adding the
bottom 2 as well below:)
-NWLink NetBIOS
-NWLink IPX\SPX...
4. Restart the computer (try this on both machines)
Let me know how you get on, Luke.

Luke,
I uninstalled / re-installed the Client for Microsoft
Networks and File & Printer Sharing on both computers. It
seems to be resolved for now.
Thanks for your help.
