Network printer assign to LPT

Hope someone can help with this. We just bought 4 new replacement computers
running XP SP2 which replace older Win98SE systems. Problem is that we have
one piece of software that requires printerws be assigned to LPT ports
rather than as a network address. I can browse the network, see and install
the printer but cannot "assign" it to an LPT port. I did find a KB article
on using net commands but I was hoping there is a simpler solution as we
have occasions where we have to change printer assignments. Thanks for any
help

What happens when the network printer is set as the default
printer? Some apps can be fooled this way; others not. OTOH,
laser printers are pretty inexpensive these days and having
one for just this system, at least, guarantees that the print
job gets done.
