My desktop and laptop are networked via direct cable connection. In trhe
past have had access to the network. have reinstalled connections on
both computers and both show connected. The desktop won't display the
workgroup, and when trying access the workgroup get the message."Not
accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions.
The network path was not found."
The laptop displays the workgroup but when trying to access the desktop
icon in the workgroup folder get the same message I get on the desktop.
How do I set permission. Am administrator on both .

Both units have WinXPSP2.

What do you receive if using net view \\remotepcname? if it system error 5, this is permission issue; if it is 53, this is name resolution issue. This link may help,

I found that I needed to add the IP addresses to my Zone Alarm "Zones"
section , including the submask address, on each computer for the other
computer being accessed and this cleared up the problem. I now have
full access between both. Lee
